Overcurrent and Distance Protection

  • Application of time-current characteristics in overcurrent relays
  • Settings for instantaneous and time-delay overcurrent protection
  • Coordination and selectivity principles for feeder protection
  • Principles of distance relaying and impedance calculation
  • Understanding Mho, Quadrilateral, and Offset distance elements
  • Setting distance zones for transmission line protection

 

DAY 3

Differential and Bus Protection

  • Principles of current differential protection
  • Application of differential schemes for transformer protection
  • Understanding CT ratio matching and zero-sequence filtering
  • High-impedance and low-impedance bus differential schemes
  • Bus protection methods including blocking and tripping schemes
  • Testing and commissioning procedures for differential relays

 

DAY 4

Apparatus Protection and Special Topics

  • Protection of synchronous generators (stator, field, and loss of excitation)
  • Motor protection elements and thermal overload considerations
  • Protection of capacitor banks and reactive power compensation
  • Understanding transformer inrush and overexcitation protection
  • Introduction to special protection schemes (SPS) and load shedding
  • Advanced topics like power swings and out-of-step blocking

Communication and Testing

  • Principles of the IEC 61850 communication standard (GOOSE, Sampled Values)
